The third thematic review of the MED Sustainable Tourism Community is now available! Learn more on how the tourism sector can ensure a sustainable and responsible economic growth as well as prosperity in the Mediterranean region.
Tourism is a key economic sector in the Mediterranean region, representing 11% of the regional GDP (WTTC, 2014, Economic impact of Travel and Tourism in the Mediterranean). It has therefore the potential to trigger economic growth and prosperity in this area.
However, the competitiveness of Mediterranean destinations is often associated to a “mass tourism model” and a lack of environmentally friendly practices. More recently, skepticism about mass tourism models started to grow, enhanced by a stagnation of international tourist arrivals since 2000. There is therefore a need to develop such potential for economic growth and prosperity in a sustainable and responsible way, developing the attractiveness of Mediterranean tourism products, services and destinations, while protecting the Mediterranean identity.
Some international strategies are put in place in this matter, such as the one plan for one planet strategy, together with the implementation of action plans at European level, such as the circular economy action plan, and the establishment of sustainable development goals at international level. Altogether, this could have the potential to make the tourism sector a driver of sustainable and responsible economic growth and prosperity in the Mediterranean region.
