Tourism is about hospitality and welcoming travelers who have an extraordinary opportunity to enjoy a unique environmental and cultural heritage and lifestyle. However, tourism should be re-connected with hosting territories to exploit the full potential of this strategic industry for the Mediterranean region, which generates 11% of its GDP, while reducing long-term negative transformations on local economies, societies and ecosystems. To achieve this objective we need policies based on evidence coming from key actors and stakeholders on the ground.

The MED Sustainable Tourism Community is organising the international conference “Re-connecting tourism: promoting evidence-based policies for sustainable development” on the 29th-30th May 2018 at the UNINT University in Rome. This will be the occasion for our Community of 18 transregional cooperation projects to present preliminary results on tourism in the Mediterranean region and to share challenges with policy makers, economic actors, international experts and the wider scientific community.

The event is articulated around three panel discussions on sustainable tourism’s key challenges: monitoring tourism pressures, implementing evidence-based policies and improving territorial cooperation. On the 30th May 2018, the MED Sustainable Tourism Community will also host a high level roundtable “When is Tourism Really Welcome? Political and economic solutions to make tourism sustainable” with national and international policy makers, economic actors and international organisations representatives .

Created in November 2016 within the Interreg MED Programme and co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the MED Sustainable Tourism Community gathers almost a hundred organisations (public authorities, private companies, universities and international organisations) active in nine Euro-Mediterranean coastal areas.

The Community strives to make tourism a real driver of sustainable development in the whole region and to keep providing tourists with extraordinary experiences, designed so as to encourage travels all year long and not just during the main holiday seasons. Most notably, the Community members are leading the development of common tools to monitor the tourism industry, they are studying and testing new tourism models and they are actively engaging policy makers and managers in a constant dialogue.
